Under the direction of Kyle Tilman, the Orff Ensemble meets every day before school. A group of 21 students, members of the Orff Ensemble are in 3rd grade and above. Students play keyboard percussion instruments (such as xylophones and metallophones), non-pitched rhythmic instruments (tambourines, güiros, etc.), and other orchestral percussion (timpani, wind chimes, etc.). Group members are required to have intermediate to advanced rhythmic and melodic proficiency, exceptional musical knowledge, and the ability to aurally learn new material while following a conductor. As an ensemble, Orff predates Sympatico; it has been at John Adams for over 20 years. Its history involves performances at the Kennedy Center, for Vice President Joe Biden, and with musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra.
